Getting started with Canvas and accessing my course

This article will review what to expect from your Canvas invite, and how to access your course for the first time, and how to update your name and email in Canvas.

After you register for a course, you can expect to receive two different emails:

  1. Confirmation Email (Confirms registration details)
  2. Canvas Invite (Invitation to join the course)

For open enrollment courses your Canvas invite will be sent in 1-2 business days, for all other courses see course descriptions or reach out to for more information.

What is Canvas? 

Canvas is the platform you will use to access your coursework like assignments and activities,  as well as communicate with your program coordinator. This is where you will submit assignments and see grading information. 

Canvas Invites

Most invites will come directly from Canvas ( so make sure to check your spam folder or whitelist the email address with your email provider.

  1. To access your class, first select Get Started in the email
  2. Then you will be asked if you have a Canvas account. If you do have an account, you can use that account to get signed in by selecting I Have a Canvas Account. If not, select Create My Account
  3. Once registered, you should see a banner at the top of your Canvas account where you will be able to select Accept to get access to the course
  4. You should now be able to access your canvas course!

Occasionally a Program Coordinator will need to send your canvas link manually. If this occurs you will receive a link via email (this will come from an email address)

It will look something like this:

After selecting this you'll be prompted to login or to create a new account. Once logged in you will be able to access your course.

If you are prompted to add a code use the letters/digits at the end of the URL so in the example above you'd use "JYj8jk9Q". 


Updating Name or Email in Canvas (Web only, not available on mobile)

Updating/Changing Name in Canvas:

  • Sign into Canvas
  • Click on Account on the top left side
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Edit Settings button on the right side of the page
  • Update your name under the Full Name box and it should update across Canvas
  • Please let your PC know if you are having issues changing your name

Updating/Changing Email in Canvas:

  • Sign into Canvas
  • Click on Account on the top left side
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on + Email Address on the right side of the page
  • Enter your Email Address (If you want to log into Canvas using the same email address in the future make sure to check the box)
  • Select Register Email
